Ernie Els opens new course on Oahu
Ernie Els has officially opened Hoakalei, a new 18-hole championship layout on Oahu’s Ewa Plain. The course plays over 7400 yards from the tips, and features seashore paspallum grass, which can be irrigated with salt water. Water hazards appear on 14 of the 18 holes on the course.
Els hopes to host a PGA event at Hoakalei in the not-too-distant future. From the Pacific Business News:
“I would love to see a golf tournament played here,” said the South African pro, who had just come off a sixth-place tie over the weekend in the PGA’s Mercedes-Benz Championship at Kapalua, Maui, and was preparing to tee it up in the PGA’s Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club later this week.
The 18-hole, 7,400-yard championship course built by the Ernie Els Design Group at Haseko’s Hoakalei Resort in Ewa Beach on Oahu will need to mature before it can host a world-class professional tournament, Els said, adding that he’d like to see a tournament played there when the course is “spot-on.”
“To have a golf tournament here would be unbelievable,” he said.
Presently only the front nine is open, but Els is confident that the entire 18 will be open by April 2009.

Nice review, thanks.
I’ve heard such wonderful things about golf in Oahu! I’ve personally never been to Hawaii but you can bet golf will be a priority when I do get to finally go!
