THE GOLF FANATIC’S GUIDE TO HAWAII NAMED FINALIST IN NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCE AWARDS

DENVER – The Golf Fanatic’s Guide to Hawaii was named a finalist in the travel guides category of the 2009 National Indie Excellence Awards on May 11. The book, released by Hot Tub Publishing, is an all-color guidebook to the top 50 publicly accessible courses in the Aloha State.

“We’re so happy to add another award to our collection,” said author Bryan Fryklund. “It is immensely rewarding to receive this sort of encouragement and validation.”

The National Indie Excellence Awards competition is judged by an independent panel of experts from all aspects—editing, marketing, publicity, and design—of the publishing industry.

“This was Hot Tub Publishing’s first book, so we’re off to a great start, don’t you think?” asked Jen Reeder, the book’s photographer. “It was such a labor of love and we’re looking forward to developing the Fanatic Guides series.”

PGA star Ernie Els wrote the foreword to The Golf Fanatic’s Guide to Hawaii. A percentage of the book’s proceeds benefit the nonprofit organization Hawaii Literacy.

HOT TUB PUBLISHING WINS FIRST PLACE AWARD FROM COLORADO INDEPENDENT PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION

DENVER – Hot Tub Publishing won a gold EVVY award at the Colorado Independent Publishers Association awards banquet on Saturday, March 28. The first place award in the travel category went to the Denver-based company’s flagship book, The Golf Fanatic’s Guide to Hawaii, a comprehensive guidebook to the top 50 publicly accessible courses in the Aloha State.

“What an honor,” said author Bryan Fryklund. “I know it sounds like a dream job to write about golf in Hawaii, but there was a lot of hard work that went into it. This award is a wonderful validation.”

Fryklund, a self-proclaimed “golf fanatic” since the age of 10, has lived and traveled in Hawaii since the mid-nineties.  He moved to the Big Island of Hawaii after Hurricane Katrina blew him and his wife, photojournalist Jen Reeder, out of New Orleans. The couple co-authored Hunter Publishing’s Adventure Guide: Hawaii the Big Island before founding Hot Tub Publishing.

“It was a no-brainer to start our own company,” Reeder said. “Why do 90 percent of the work for 10 percent of the net?”

The couple spent several months traveling to six Hawaiian islands – Fryklund golfed and wrote about each course while Reeder photographed them. Fryklund, who is also a web designer, created the book’s layout. He was awarded a third place EVVY Tech Award for Layout and Design.

“It was important to me that the book be visually appealing, so we spent the extra money to have color on every page,” Fryklund said. “We wanted it to be part-guidebook, part-coffee table book so that it becomes a souvenir after the vacation is over.”

PGA star Ernie Els wrote the foreword to The Golf Fanatic’s Guide to Hawaii.

Fryklund and Reeder joined CIPA in 2008 after relocating to Denver. CIPA’s EVVY Awards, named for founder Evelyn Kaye, have been awarded annually since 1994. For more information, visit www.cipabooks.com or www.hottubpublishing.com.

THE GOLF FANATIC’S GUIDE TO HAWAII HITS BOOKSHELVES

Nov. 11, 2008 – Hot Tub Publishing is proud to announce the publication of The Golf Fanatic’s Guide to Hawaii, a travel guidebook for golfers headed to the Aloha State.

“I’m not going to lie – it was a dream job traveling to 50 of the state’s top courses,” said Bryan Fryklund, the book’s author. “Hawaii offers such a rich, diverse golf experience.”

Fryklund rates and describes courses on six islands in The Golf Fanatic’s Guide to Hawaii, sharing tips for play from the PGA pro (or similar expert) at each course and providing directions, phonetic pronunciations and descriptions of key holes, including “the hole you’re most likely to choke on,” as well as the all-important “19th puka (hole).” Color photography throughout the book makes it part guidebook, part coffeetable book.

PGA star Ernie Els wrote the foreword to The Golf Fanatic’s Guide to Hawaii.

“I’m so honored that Ernie Els, a golfer who I’ve always admired, wrote the foreword to my book,” Fryklund said. “‘The Big Easy’ is such a class act. I really couldn’t be happier.”

The Golf Fanatic’s Guide to Hawaii is the first book in the company’s line of Fanatic Guides. One percent of the proceeds will be donated to Hawaii Literacy.

KAPALUA GOLF COURSES NAMED TOP COURSES IN NEW GOLF GUIDEBOOK

Kapalua Resort’s championship golf courses received top honors in The Golf Fanatic’s Guide to Hawaii, a new travel guide to the top 50 publicly accessible courses in the Aloha State. The Plantation Course is even featured on the book’s cover.

In the introduction to the section on Kapalua, Fryklund wrote, “Colors seem more vivid here, as if the hues are a bit more saturated than usual, and the landscape is often bathed in a gentle golden glow.”

Kapalua’s two courses are prominently featured in the book’s Top Ten lists. The Bay Course’s #5 hole was one of the Top Ten Ocean Holes, and both of the courses’ restaurants made the Top 10 19th Pukas list.

LANA‘I GOLF COURSES PRAISED IN NEW GOLF GUIDEBOOK

The Four Seasons Resort and its two championship golf courses received top honors in The Golf Fanatic’s Guide to Hawaii, a new travel guide to the top 50 publicly accessible courses in the Aloha State.

In the introduction to the Lana‘i chapter, author Bryan Fryklund wrote: “The Four Seasons operates two world-class resorts on Lana‘i. Manele Bay is the picture of tropical luxury, with pools, beaches and dolphins in the bay, while the Lodge at Koele sits at nearly 2,000 feet amidst Cook pines and retains the rustic vibe of an English hunting lodge. The golf courses at each hotel are equally divergent, from Nicklaus’s masterpiece at Manele, which features holes with shots from cliff to cliff over surging ocean breaks, to Koele’s upland layout, one of the most unusual and lovely courses in the state.”

The Lana‘i courses are prominently featured in the book’s Top Ten lists. The Experience at Manele appears on the lists of Top Ten Classics and Ocean Holes (for #12), and its restaurant made the Top Ten 19th Pukas. The Experience at Koele is one of the state’s Top Beauties, and both courses had Top Practice Facilities and Author’s Choice.

Golf courses are not ranked within the top ten lists in the book.

“Visiting Lana‘i was one of the highlights of the research trip for Golf Fanatic,” Fryklund said. “It was a great escape when I was living on Maui, so it was fun to return in a professional capacity. It really is an outstanding golf experience, and every golfer I met there was having an equally terrific time.”

PGA star Ernie Els wrote the foreword to The Golf Fanatic’s Guide to Hawaii, which has a publication date of November 11, 2008. For more information, visit www.HotTubPublishing.com.
